Tyshawn Thompson, of Fair Lawn, Helps Assumption Football Team Reach NCAA Playoffs, Finish with Record-Breaking Season

2016 Nov 29

For the second consecutive year, the Assumption College Football team advanced to the NCAA Division II playoffs. Tyshawn Thompson, of Fair Lawn, competed on the team in the Greyhounds' historic season.

Assumption was nationally ranked entering the 2016 season after finishing the 2015 regular season 9-1, winning the Northeast-10 Championship, and advancing to the second round of the NCAA Tournament. The Hounds finished this season 9-3.

"When these student-athletes signed on to join our team, they were signing on to make a difference in our community on and off the field," said fourth-year Head Coach Bob Chesney. "To be able to see that plan through and earn a spot in back-to-back NCAA playoff appearances is testament to all of their hard work. Regardless of their individual roles, they all contributed in some way to this season's success. To have Assumption recognized as a national power is what we had hoped to accomplish when we brought these young men into this program, and it is very humbling to be able to work side by side with each of them as we continue to see this plan through."

Assumption's 23 seniors finish their careers as the winningest class in program history, accumulating a record of 33-14. It is six wins more than any other program in school history.

Other record breakers this season include quarterback Marc Monks, whose 2,803 passing yards for the season established a new program single-season record, while his 25 passing touchdowns are also a single-season record. In addition, Andrew Benson's six interceptions this season is tied for the second-most in a single season in program history, and Dylan Oxsen's 17 touchdowns this season is the second most ever in a single season at Assumption.
