Meghan Cushing, of Gorham, Elected to Assumption College Student Government Association

2016 Nov 21

The Assumption College Student Government Association (SGA) has announced that Meghan Cushing, a member of the Class of 2018 from Gorham, has been elected to serve as Senator during the 2016-2017 academic year.

The Student Government Association is the governing student body on campus, representing all undergraduate students. The purpose of SGA is to advocate for students and give voice to their opinions to enhance students' experience and encourage their participation in extra-curricular activities. Their work is guided by their Constitution and by-laws. Students elected to a leadership position in SGA contribute to the student life climate of the campus community and demonstrate honor, excellence and Greyhound pride.

"The members of Student Government are elected by their peers to represent their interests," explained Catherine WoodBrooks, vice president for Student Affairs. "All constituencies of the campus rely on those members to be the voice of students in a variety of issues that emerge. As the vice president of Student Affairs, I rely heavily on their input and meet regularly with the SGA Executive Board. The relationship we develop helps build mutual trust, which is essential within the context of shared governance."

"From sponsoring blood drives, providing voter registration and planning Midnight Madness to meeting with prominent faculty and committees on campus in order to be a voice for the students, SGA encompasses many aspects of student life at Assumption," said Derek Pettinelli, who is currently serving as president of the Class of 2017.

SGA is comprised of students elected from each class. These class officers work specifically for the purpose of fundraising, planning events for their class and ultimately their class' Senior Week. Executive officer positions include: president, vice president for financial affairs, vice president for student affairs, vice president for academic affairs, and senate speaker.
