Maura Geoghegan, of Foxboro, studying abroad at Assumption College's Rome, Italy, Campus

2016 Oct 27

Maura Geoghegan, of Foxboro, is one of 17 students spending the fall semester abroad at Assumption College's Rome Campus where the city, and entire country of Italy, becomes a living classroom.

Established in 2013, Assumption's Rome Campus provides students with a transformative experience during their semester abroad. The campus, within walking distance to St. Peter's Basilica and other historical sites, is located in a residential area where students become part of the neighborhood and interact and befriend authentic "Romans". The semester-long program offers students the opportunity to fully immerse themselves in the culture and history of the region. The unique courses, taught by Assumption faculty, take full advantage of all that the city-and country-has to offer. Faculty lead visits to culturally and historically significant locations in Rome, with the purpose of using the city as a classroom. Thus far this semester, Geoghegan has traveled to Sorrento and will visit other cities in Italy such as Florence, Naples and Venice.

Travel is an important part of the Rome experience. Trips to other sites and cities are included in tuition. Housing includes both classrooms and living accommodations, where students enjoy family-style meals in an elegant dining room prepared by an authentic Italian chef.

"As a Catholic liberal arts institution, Assumption College has remained dedicated to the education of the whole student by providing to them opportunities both inside and outside of the classroom," said Francesco C. Cesareo, Ph.D., president of Assumption College. "This transformative experience in Rome, Italy, which enables students to live and study together in a tight-knit learning community, allows students to grow personally and intellectually as they explore the birthplace of the classic liberal arts tradition that influenced the development of Western Civilization. The Rome Campus is but one of the many distinguished programs Assumption offers students to help them discover their gifts and talents, which they then use to better the world around them."

Assumption College's Rome campus has been nationally ranked as a top-ten best study abroad program and is considered one of the most desirable study abroad opportunities in the United States because it provides students with a unique and personal experience.
