Lauren Fitzgerald, of Somerville, Studying Abroad at Assumption College's Rome Campus

2018 Feb 20

Assumption College has announced that Lauren Fitzgerald, of Somerville, is spending the spring 2018 semester studying at the College's campus in Rome, Italy. Fitzgerald, Class of 2019, will benefit from nearly four months in Rome where the city - and country, become the classroom.

"Students studying at Assumption's Rome Campus are afforded a unique opportunity to live and learn in a city that was the birthplace of Western Civilization," said Eloise Knowlton, Ph.D., dean of undergraduate studies at Assumption College. "The exuberant city, filled with historic museums, galleries and churches, breaks down the walls of the traditional classroom, enabling students to see and experience history that they would otherwise read about in textbooks. These first-hand experiences have led to an academic enlightenment and the personal growth of the students who have studied at our Rome Campus."

The Rome Campus, rated a "Top 10 Study Abroad Program," is led this semester by Patrick Corrigan, Ph.D., and Cary LeBlanc, Ph.D., and complemented by Art Historian Daria Borghese, the classes offered include Renaissance Art & Architecture, Drawing, Socrates and the Search for Truth, as well as the Grand Tour independent study. Students reside in the recently renovated Villino Dufault-located in a residential area full of authentic dining and shopping opportunities with nearby public transportation-and classes take place throughout the city in museums, art galleries and historic landmarks . Included in tuition are weekend excursions to Italian cities Florence, Naples, and Pompeii.

While studying at the Rome Campus, students enjoy traditional Italian cooking and enjoy family-style meals prepared by authentic Italian Chef Signora Monica Romanini. During meals at Villino Dufault, students experience a full spectrum of not only food culture, but learn the nuances of the Italian people and their culture. The College's Rome Campus also provides a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to explore Christianity and the faith-based community that has shaped spirituality in the modern world. With the Vatican City and historic churches spread throughout the city, students have easy access to learn more about the Catholic faith upon which Assumption College was founded.
