Julia Martin, of Woburn, Inducted into Phi Sigma Tau International Honor Society

2017 May 3

The Assumption College Department of Philosophy has announced that Julia Martin, of Woburn, has been named to the Philosophy International Honor Society, Phi Sigma Tau. Martin, Class of 2018, was inducted into the honor society on Tuesday, April 18.

"The faculty of the Department of Philosophy are very excited to welcome this year's inductees into Phi Sigma Tau, the international honor society in philosophy," said Sam Stoner, Ph.D., assistant professor of philosophy and the faculty advisor for Phi Sigma Tau and Assumption's Philosophy Club. "They have merited this honor because of their excellent performance in their philosophy classes, their respect for their teachers and their fellow students, and their sincere desire to discover the truth. They carry forward Assumption's highest traditions."

Phi Sigma Tau was founded at Muhlenberg College in 1930. Its purpose is to promote ties among philosophy departments in accredited institutions and students in philosophy. Both on the local and national levels, Phi Sigma Tau considers its organization a means for developing and honoring academic excellence as well as philosophical interest. In addition to providing a means of awarding distinction to students having high scholarship and interest in philosophy, the Society also promotes interest in philosophy among the general collegiate public.

To be inducted into Phi Sigma Tau, students at Assumption need to successfully complete at least three courses in philosophy, and demonstrated interest in philosophy beyond the classroom.
