Ashley Lockwood, of Feeding Hills, Receives Economics and Global Studies Award for Academic Excellence
2018 Mar 27
Assumption College senior Ashley Lockwood, of Feeding Hills, has been named the recipient of the 2018 George A. Doyle Merit Award for Excellence in Economics or Global Studies. Lockwood is a double major in economics and mathematics, with a minor in computer science. She received her award during a ceremony on March 22.
The Doyle Merit Award is named for the late Professor George Doyle, Ph.D., who established the economics and global studies program at Assumption. Each year, the department selects a senior who embodies Dr. Doyle's principles of having "extraordinary intellect, recognized community service, and potential within their field." The award carries a $1,500 prize, made possible by generous gifts to the Doyle Merit Award Fund.
"I want to thank the entire economics department for their support from the time I decided to be an economics major when I was a freshman, up until applying to grad[uate] schools this semester," said Lockwood, who plans to pursue a Ph.D. in either economics or mathematics. "In my pursuit to earn my Ph.D. and become a professor one day, I hope to be remembered as fondly as Prof. Doyle has been here."
While at Assumption, Lockwood has served as an orientation leader; an economics and mathematics tutor in the College's Academic Support Center, in which she has also earned an advanced National tutoring certificate from the College Reading and Learning Association; and was a member of the varsity field hockey team for all four years. She is a member of the Assumption College Honors Program, Kappa Mu Epsilon, the National Mathematics Honor Society, as well as Omicron Delta Epsilon, the International Economics Honor Society. This year, Lockwood was named to the National Field Hockey Coaches Association All-Academic squad and has earned Assumption's Student-Athlete Directors Citations for superior academics every semester. Currently, she is interning with the Worcester Regional Research Bureau examining local economic and social issues. Lockwood is also a youth field hockey coach in Worcester and a volunteer assistant coordinator for the Brian Litz Memorial Scholarship Fund, named for a player on the Agawam boys' basketball team who lost his life on the job in Florida as a canine police officer.
During the ceremony, keynote speaker Malcolm Asadoorian, Ph.D. '95, an Assumption alumnus who double majored in economics and computer science and the 1995 Doyle Award recipient, spoke about his nearly two decades of experience working in the higher education field, including his current roles as vice president of academic affairs and a professor of economics at Regis College in Weston, and how Assumption's mission has guided him throughout his career. In fact, his mathematics and economics honor society certificates, as well as his Doyle Award certificate, have hung in every one of his offices.
"It is a daily reminder that if it wasn't for all of the wonderful faculty in this room, especially Professor Doyle, I would not be here today," Dr. Asadoorian said. "So every day, I try to emulate the mission of Assumption, the values of the entire faculty, particularly Professor Doyle, and try to give back in the same transformative experience to every life I touch in terms of the heart and mind. Please take the initiative to make the most of this education and carry it on, because that is really what Assumption is all about."
