Alyssa Masciarelli, of North Dighton, Spends Month Studying at Assumption College's Rome, Italy, Campus

Alyssa Masciarelli, of North Dighton, was one of seven students who spent an abbreviated summer semester studying abroad at Assumption College's Rome Campus, where the city and country of Italy became a living classroom.

The Rome summer program was designed specifically for students who are unable to spend a semester in Rome during the academic year due to either academic or athletic commitments. During this abbreviated session, students spent a month immersed in the Italian culture while fulfilling at least one general education requirement at the Rome Campus. The four-week program included a specially designed course in political science and the option of enrolling in one distance-learning course prior to departure. Students also took a two-day excursion - included in tuition - to Florence.

Established in 2013, Assumption's Rome Campus provides students with a transformative experience during their semester abroad. The campus, within walking distance to St. Peter's Basilica and other historical sites, is located in a residential area where students become part of the neighborhood and interact and befriend authentic "Romans." The semester-long program, held in both the fall and the spring, offers students the opportunity to fully immerse themselves in the culture and history of the region. The unique courses, taught by Assumption faculty, take full advantage of all that the city-and country-has to offer. Faculty lead visits to culturally and historically significant locations in Rome, with the purpose of using the city as a classroom.
